Federal Criminal Defense Lawyers Handling Drug Crime Cases

Drug crimes at the federal level include offenses such as trafficking, possession or manufacture of controlled substances. The difference between a state and federal drug crime often has to do with the amount of drugs involved and/or whether the drugs were trafficked across state lines.

Penalties are generally more severe at the federal level and it is more difficult to get charges reduced or dropped. An aggressive defense lawyer on your side may work hard to get your federal drug charges downgraded to state criminal charges if possible.

If you are facing federal drug charges in Illinois, your case may be handled through the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. To get a strong defense underway, turn to Leonard Trial Lawyers for knowledgeable, aggressive legal counsel. With more than 30 combined years of experience, we are ready to help you find

Avoid Harsh Federal Drug Crime Penalties If Possible

Banned or controlled substances according to schedules in federal laws include:

  • Schedule 1, with no medical uses and considered to be dangerous, including heroin, LSD and ecstasy.
  • Schedule 2, with a high potential for abuse, including methamphetamine, cocaine, oxycodone and Fentanyl
  • Schedule 3, with some medical uses as well as a high risk of dependency, including Tylenol with codeine, testosterone, steroids and ketamine

Convictions for drug crimes are serious at both the state and federal levels, but penalties can be harsher at the federal level primarily because drug quantities tend to be higher. For example, if you are convicted of a federal crime of manufacturing, distributing or dispensing controlled substances, including marijuana, you may face penalties as follows:

  • A minimum prison term of up to 5 years and/or a fine of $250,000
  • A maximum term of life imprisonment without release and no eligibility for parole, and a fine of up to $8,000,000 for one individual or $20,000,000 when two or more conspirators are convicted

The examples above are only some of the drugs and penalties seen after federal drug charges in Illinois and elsewhere. For personalized counsel regarding your federal arrest or investigation associated with illegal substances, reach out to Leonard Trial Lawyers.
