Chicago Criminal Defense Lawyer Michael Leonard Address What To Do When Law Enforcement Knocks On Your Door. Clients often ask – “What should I do if law enforcement comes to my house or place of business with or without a warrant?” This is a critical issue because, if the approach by law enforcement is not handled properly by the client, it may have long-term and devastating consequences.
Here, are some quick tips:
First, do not make any statements to law enforcement, other than greeting them, asking to see their credentials, and asking them to see their search warrant.
Not only will any such statements be used against the client, they may provide the basis to charge the client with a criminal offense in the first place. There may not even have been a basis for charging the client, but for the client’s statements.
Second, contact your lawyer – a competent one with criminal law experience – immediately.
Third, do not let them in, and do not let them search – unless of course they have a search warrant.
Fourth, only provide access to the limited and specific areas and items that are the subject of the search warrant/
