Top Federal Criminal Lawyers Obtain Sentence of Probation for Former US Postal Worker Accused of Fraud. Michael Leonard and Matthew Chivari of Leonard Trial Lawyers were able to successfully advocate for their client, over an almost three-year time period, and obtain a federal sentence for their client that did not include any federal jail time – and which consisted of a term of probation/supervised release of one year. That sentence was handed down today by Judge Martha Pacold in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois (Chicago). Federal prosecutors originally charged Leonard Trial Lawyers’ client with two Counts of embezzling “mail and articles and things contained therein entrusted to her and which came into her possession intended. to be conveyed. by mail, namely one piece of First-Class mail,” In violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 1709. Ultimately, after battling the Government for two years, the United States Attorneys Office for the Northern District of Illinois agreed to reduce those federal felony charges, and charge the defendant with only a misdemeanor. In arguing in support of a sentence that did not include any period of incarceration, Michael Leonard emphasized the defendant’s long history of gainful employment, her outstanding conducted while on pre-trial release on this case, and her continued engagement in gainful employment and financial responsibilities during the almost three year time period that this case was pending. Leonard Trial Lawyers’ client was extremely pleased with this outcome, as was the Firm.
