Federal lawyer Michael Leonard volunteered at Chicago Legal Prep Charter Academy on December 9, 2022. Legal Prep is a high school whose mission is to use its unique law-themed curriculum and culture of high expectations to cultivate compassion, self-motivation, and advocacy in young adults who are preparing to attend and succeed in four-year colleges and universities. It is an open-enrollment high school, which is located on the west side of Chicago. Among other subject areas, Legal Prep helps develop its students’ skills in written and oral communication, critical thinking, problem solving, and advocacy.
Mr. Leonard helped lead small group section discussions with the students, focusing on current issues in the law. The topics addressed included bail, bail reform, sentencing, and other issues and challenges that lawyers face in representing clients in federal and state criminal prosecutions. A lawyer from the United States Attorney’s Office in Chicago, as well as two other experienced Chicago defense lawyers, also shared their own experiences with the Legal Prep students.
It will be fun for Mr. Leonard to see some of these very students in Court someday.
